What happens with amnesia and unclaimed patient?

Okay so I'm working on an idea for a book. Basically a girl is dropped off at the steps of a hospital in bad shape. She is 17-18 years old but no ID on her, they fix her up but she ends up in a coma for a few months due to swelling. When she wakes she remembers basic things, what the world is like how to function, all the skills she had before she was brought in but no memory of her life. Just her first name from a bracelet with it engraved. No one has claimed her, her picture we out every where but no one has come forward and no hits on finger prints. Due to her unknown age what would happen to her? I will take liberty with the story of course as it is a work of fiction but I want to have something legit to stand on. I want both medical sides as well as law enforcement sides if you can help. Thanks. What happens with amnesia and unclaimed patient?
The only other thing hospitals do in this situation is go to the local paper and/or TV news and have a picture and story of the patient run.

I just had this happen a few months ago. Only the patient was so sick, had cancer and brain mets. He was brought in by paramedics. Somehow the newspaper story got to his daughter in Texas. It turns out he had been estranged from his family for 25 years. The daughter was able to speak to him over the phone 2 days before he died. What happens with amnesia and unclaimed patient?
